Abstract
Generally, women are portrayed in the media as being submissive, passive, dependent, inferior, and subservient to men. Cross-cultural research, moreover, has found great similarities in these portrayals between western industrialized countries,
eastern communist (or ex-communist) countries, and southern developing countries: women are overall underrepresented in the media, in production as well as in content.
